By Fran Matthews Would you like to have Santa and Mrs. Claus suits for your Barbie and Ken dolls this year? How about a toy sack to go along with the ensemble? You can sew these outfits for your dolls in just a short time. The following are some suggestions to consider as you create your holiday doll costumes. 1. Use doll patterns that you already have. You dont have to go out and buy a special pattern made just for Santa and Mrs. Claus suits. With a few modifications, you can create your own unique designs. For Santa, you will need a long sleeve jacket, a pair of pants, a belt, and a hat. For Mrs. Claus, you will want a long dress. 2. Find fabrics you are comfortable with. Suitable materials include red polyester, fleece, or panne velvet. All of these choices sew up very nicely with a low shred factor. White fur or fleece works well for the trim. Black vinyl with a faux leather appearance makes a nice belt. Use a small square of yellow or gold vinyl for the belt buckle. The same red and white materials can be used for the Mrs. Claus costume, too. 3. Design a beard for Santa and attach it to the hat. I like to use white fleece for my trims and beard just because its easier to control. Fur has a more realistic look, but can shred when you cut it. White fleece has a soft texture, and a warm, finished appearance. If you choose white fleece for Santas beard, use a double layer and add a few vertical seam lines to create a realistic look. Then, sew it to the hat so that “it fits just right” when you slip the hat onto your Ken dolls head. 4. Sew up some black boots to complete Santas suit. I used black polyester with white fleece trim because I like working with those fabrics. But, you can use other ones, such as polyester, panne velvet, fleece, felt, or velour. Secure two 3-inch strips of 1/4-inch elastic in each boot. Sew one along the ankle line, and the other along the top of the boot. These elastic strips will help to hold Santas boots in place. 5. For the Mrs. Claus dress, add some white fleece to the sleeves and at the bottom of the dress hemline. Gold trim around the neckline and bottom edge will give her dress a fancy, holiday style. For her hat, start with a circle of red fabric, and add white lace trim around the outer edge. Then, add 4 1/2 inches of 1/4-inch elastic to keep the hat on her head. I sewed the elastic about 1/2 inch just inside the outer edge. 6. Remember to sew up a drawstring sack for Santas toys. The sack could be made of a fabric with reindeer, bells, elves or a festive holiday scene. Follow basic steps to make a drawstring bag. For presentation purposes, fill the sack with stuffing or whatever you have around to give it a full appearance. By Donna Kelly Step 1: Decide what type of skin you have. This is important so you know how to care for your skin and what products to use. There are 3 basic skin types: dry, oily and combination skin types. Type 1: Dry Skin Dry skin occurs when the dermis does not secrete enough oil, or sebum. The result is tight, drawn, flaky skin and a dull complexion. In more extreme cases, dry skin lacks elasticity and can be extremely sensitive to the sun, wind, and cold temperatures. Type 2: Oily Skin This type of skin has over-reactive oil producing glands, which makes the face shiny, especially the forehead, down the central panel of your nose and the chin (the T-zone). The pores of this skin type are enlarged making it prone to blackhead, pimple and acne. Oily skin needs special cleansing to keep the pores unclogged. Type 3: Combination Skin People with combination skin typically have some oily skin and either normal or dry skin on different parts of their face. Normal skin has a balanced oil and water content and feels smooth and velvety, not dry or oily. Normal skin is evenly toned with tiny, generally unclogged pores. After a wash it feels smooth and comfortable. Normal skin only occasionally breaks out in spots. Besides these daily steps you should also, less frequently, exfoliate and use a facial mask. Exfoliation allows you to remove dead skin cells sitting on the surface of your skin. The circular motion in which exfoliating should be performed also helps to stimulate your skin allowing oxygen to come to the surface. Exfoliating is a crucial step for those with either dry skin or those with dehydrated oil rich skin. Facial masks give you an extra boost to combat any concerns you might have for your skin. Just remember not to keep your mask on for more than 15 minutes because you could actually burn your skin. All masks should not be applied on the eyes (there are eye masks specifically formulated for this delicate area) and should be washed off with a warm face cloth. So how often should you really be doing all of this ? Cleansing, toning and moisturising should happen twice daily; morning and night. You can exfoliate and give yourself a mask every one to two weeks depending on your skincare concerns. Here are the steps you should follow for your day to day routine: 1. Cleanse 2. Tone 3. The importance of an holistic approach to mental and physical health will be explained. Do you know, what really startled me since I was a child? It is actually very simple but profound at the same time. I could see that there were problems in the adults’ lifes. That was one thing. The other was that they never seemed to really get beyond them. My first assumption about grown ups was that they are really smart people. I mean, they were grown up and I was a kid. You admire them. Anytime they want they can turn on the TV or take the car for a ride, just for fun. They can go to sleep whenever they want or they can stay awake till the morning dawn. They are gods… My father used to comment on the radio news. From what I could hear I realized that adult people are not what they seem to be. They lacked knowledge, although they heavily pretended to have some. Adults build huge hospitals, but the number of diseased people is increasing. They do a lot of research, but things get worse. They are holding big conferences, but there is no solution to poverty, hunger and pollution. The destruction of the planet continues, unhampered. They scientifically study the human mind for years, but still they are fighting over minor issues and killing each other. Depression is rampant. The experts are wearing white coats of authority and they look really impressive. But the picture is deceiving. They are as helpless as the rest. They have been told that depression is caused by some material disfunction in the body. They wouldn’t admit it, but this theory is the cause of their own latent or acute depression. There is one important saying: “Doctor, heal thyself”. So, obviously, an expert treating depression in a person should be free of that mental condition himself. But is this really the case? Are our experts examples in their own lives? Have they achieved the peace of mind and the happiness that we are looking for? To be quite frank: Our mental health experts are haunted by depression themselves. Of course, their job is demanding and it is hard to stay untouched from all these unfortunate human destinies. But that is no excuse. For a health practitioner it is of prime necessity to become a strong, positive and loving personality. It is not enough to just “know” one’s field of “expertise”. Life operates on rules that cannot be managed properly just by some theoretical knowledge. A doctor abusing nicotine and alcohol is as unbelievable as a psychologist suffering from a minority complex, being arrogant and insensitive. People tell me about their experience with mental and physical health practitioners. They feel ignored, misunderstood and treated like an innate object. That’s how modern science looks at it’s objects: things, which have to be manipulated into proper function. People feel that the experts lack self esteem and hide behind academic degrees and honors. They rightly perceive all this as symptoms of personal weakness. How to develop real trust in such a person? The formal training in any given area was much less in former times. But that does not mean that we have become advanced. Modern education has created highly trained specialists in their respective fields, but being too much focused on a tiny segment of reality they seem to have lost the whole big picture. At the same time they have lost themselves. A person is not just ears or heart or mind. A person is an individual being. And what does that mean? A person cannot be divided. A person is one. Treating a depressed person without this consideration will only lead to frustration and more depression. Depression spreads like wildfire. People seem to get lost in the rat race and the competition. Survival of the fittest. They drown in the struggle for existence. The one and only thing a depressed person needs is unalloyed love and compassion. No one will learn this at university. The students will learn about material processes in the body, in the brain. But they will learn little or nothing about the person possessing the body or brain. In this way they will not learn anything about themselves, too. They will look at depression with the arrogance and helplessness of a lost soul. How should they be able to help? A psychologist, a coach, a trainer, a priest, a doctor: they all have to understand what life really is. They have to thoroughly understand themselves first. They have to get rid of their own depression and hopelessness deeply buried in themselves. They actually have to become free and independent loving persons.
